Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
June 16, 2019 - New York

In 1920, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned liquor production, public consumption and the selling of anything alcoholic. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol. It made some of the most vicious gangsters gain fame and fortune. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened by the thousands and served bootleg liquor to a thirsty public. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. There you can sip a craft cocktail served by some of the top bartenders in New York City. While sipping on your now "legal" alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. At the end of the tour you will be a "wiseguy" about Prohibition and the Italian mob. Further, you will stop in for some of the best pizza in all of New York City. The tour kicks off at Lt. Petrosino Square.

Ishmael Reed's new play "The Haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda" will premiere at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in May, after four sold-out readings and coverage from the New York Times, New Yorker magazine, the Observer, the Paris Review and more. According to historian Ron Chernow and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alexander Hamilton was an abolitionist, even though the real Hamilton was involved in the slave trade in a variety of ways. His policy toward Native-Americans was "extirpation." Reed's play brings to the forefront those characters who are absent from "Hamilton, The Revolution": slaves, Native Americans, indentured servants and Harriet Tubman. Welcome to the Weird: Illustrated Lecture and Book Signing with Erik Davis - Green-Wood Cemetery

As the world's weather jumps the rails, some have started referring to global warming as global weirding—and for good reason. Between the apocalyptic mutations of our times, the emergence of what philosopher Graham Harman calls weird materialism, and the growing popularity of psychedelia, esoterica, and other uncanny cultures, the weird has become a key zone of contemporary thought and experience. In this talk, Dr. Erik Davis—author of the new book High Weirdness: Drugs, Esoterica, and Visionary Experience in the Seventies—will deepen our historical, conceptual, and aesthetic sense of what it means to live in weird times. Erik Davis is an author, scholar, podcaster, and award-winning journalist based in San Francisco. He has been talking, writing, and presenting about alternative culture, spirituality, and media technology for over thirty years. A popular speaker and documentary talking head, he also explores the "cultures of consciousness" on his weekly podcast Expanding Mind. He earned his PhD in religious studies at Rice University in 2015.

Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl - Lt. Petrosino Square
June 19, 2019 - New York

Eyes In The Sky: The Secret Rise of Gorgon Stare and How It Will Watch Us All dives into this new technology that can track 1,000 moving targets at once. Big-data analysis can easily examine thousands of hours of footage, or even trace a target backward in time to find out where it came from—like playing a movie in reverse to see how it begins.

Tainted Love 80's Dance Party - The Bell House
June 21, 2019 - Brooklyn

This event is 21 and over Soft Cell's pioneering 1981 cover of the Northern Soul classic, "Tainted Love," is the inspiration for this awesome 80s dance party. Building on a solid foundation of New Wave, we'll dig deeper into the catalog of massive hits and overlooked misses from the late 70s through the early 90s - pivotal years in musical history that blurred the lines between Analog and Digital, Disco and Synthpop, Funk and Hip-Hop. A time when Alternative was called Post-Punk, Indie actually meant independent, and Throbbing Gristle's "Hot on the Heels of Love" surely could have been alongside Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on the charts...with today's perspective. Other passions include CBGB-era New York, Batcave-era London - Punk Rock, Glam Rock, Kraut Rock, Girl Rock, Dad Rock, Rockabilly, Ska, Machine Soul, Blue-Eyed Soul, Darkwave, Coldwave - plus some guilty pleasures in the (strictly) Old-School Rap department.

The newspapers called it a "riot" because the straight world lacked the language to describe what happened on the sweltering early morning hours of June 28, 1969. It began with an all-too-common attack by New York City police who never expected their would-be victims to fight back. Like so many revolutions, the Stonewall Uprising began spontaneously in a tiny place no one had ever heard of, and the reverberations from those five days of outrage and resistance have echoed through American history to this day. Twelve of those echoes will ring out on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at The Loft at City Winery during Stonewall + 50, a showcase production of the popular spoken-word series Read650. This latest curated presentation will feature a dozen straight and LGBTQ writers recalling incidents from their lives that have been colored by what happened at the Stonewall Inn 50 years ago. For the past five years, Read650 has attracted top writers, playwrights, memoirists—Pulitzer Prize winners and first-timers—to read their works before standing room only a... (read more)
