Song Review: Toronto-Native Julian Daniel Longs for a "Sidekick" on Latest Release

Canada always gets the good stuff.

Julian Daniel, 19-year-old emerging alt-pop artist, has been been tirelessly working over the past year trying to perfect his sound and the direction he wants to take his blossoming music career. With today's release of new single "Sidekick", it's safe to say he's found his way.

"Sidekick" details those pesky high school romances and one's feeling of regret that comes with not following through on something you desired. Accompanied by Phil Collins-esque drums, Daniel weaves through tranquil production as he pushes rewind on life to redo and alter certain important decisions, longing for a second chance.

Strengthening and finding confidence in his vocals following releases such as "Paradise" and "Radio", the young artist makes a convincing case for a previous suitor to want to reignite the flame. That possibility doesn't come without hesitation and nerves though. "If only you were psychic, I'd never be alone, wishing, hoping, waiting, you'd call me on the phone," he sings on the hook.

Though only a few years removed from the high school scene, "Sidekick" finds Daniel still stuck in the past, unable to shake the idea of what could have been. With narrative, effective songwriting, the artist shares an easily accessible set of emotions with listeners who have ever wondered the same. A sense of hope, remorse and fear all accounted for.

“Sidekick was inspired by high school relationships and wishing that Julian had the chance to tell his crush how he felt. He just wants to go back in time and redo everything he didn’t do," Daniel tells Stage Right Secrets of the new release. "This song is based off of a high school relationship but it could also relate to anyone who has ever regretted not doing something that they really wanted to do. We only live once so why not live in the moment!”

Though clocking in at under three minutes, "Sidekick" gets its point across without the fluff. For an artist still crafting a name for himself, knowing that honest storytelling conveyed with a passionate vocal performance is all you need will certainly take him far.

Daniel is set to release his debut extended play later this year and tour North America.
